UH CRIME

Living on Campus
By: Hailey Hickl
For this project, our team worked with UH Crime. I was specifically tasked with dorm life or student housing, because for those students this campus is where they live. Campus safety is important for all students, but it weighs a little heavier for those who don’t leave once their classes are done.
My goal is to make that information easy to access and to understand, delivered in a way that sticks with you and serves as a helpful tool. For students who are living here: here’s what you need to know.
Deciding Where To Live
Wouldn't you want to know what areas have a tendency for theft, or if majority of sexual assaults all happen in one housing unit?

Cougar Village I, Cougar Village II, and Moody Towers are all listed as first year housing options on the UH Housing site. however, Moody Towers is not excluded to freshman only, any student at UH can live there. Perhaps that explains the higher crime rate?
Let's take a closer look at Moody Towers
Looking at the graph to the right, consumption by a minor is a highly occurring offense.
This could be because older students are able to live in Moody Towers, minors are getting their older friends to buy them alcohol and are getting caught.

What Do I Need to Be Most Aware Of?
The most commonly occurring crime at UH is theft.
There are over 1000 reported thefts on campus since 2018. This graphic depicts which locations experience the highest number of theft and how many there have been in the past four years.

I removed theft from this graph because it was simply unproportiante to the rest of the data. Theft has a total of over 1,000 reported offenses, while the remaining top 10 are no greater than 400 offenses. Therefore I chose to focus on the other crimes since we know that theft is a high risk.

Despite its record of sexual assaults, former Cougar Village I resident Michaela Edwards said she always felt safe while living there. "There were always police at the door and the RA's made their presence known."
